spring clean up! oh man! i had no idea joe was so into his yard until we had to clean up all 8 acres of it this spring! it was so much work! weeding, and mulching (2 huge dump trucks full!), putting down pea gravel, planting flowers, trimming bushes and hedges and trees, pulling ivy, and my least favorite- draining the pond!! it was a TON of work, and we went through a fair number of hired hands to get it all done with. but i must say, the results are very enjoyable! the yard is great and so beautiful at each part of the seasons!

this is just one of the many beds that were weeded (and probably some really nice flower bulbs were taken out accidentally too). now its all grown in and colorful and green!
the pond all weeded and cleaned out, and the paths edged and ready for fresh gravel. now it is very grown in, almost covering the paths again, but it looks so great! and the lily pads are beautiful too!
we drained the pond almost completely. then joe reset some of the retaining wall rocks, and we sludged out a lot of the muck off the bottom. and there were so many lily pads plants, that we pulled some out so they wouldn't over take the pond. we didn't drain it all the way, so the fish wouldn't be disturbed. but we did find a HUGE turtle hiding in the rocks! he was easily 2 feet across. haven't seen him since!
and we built a great fire pit in the way back. it has certainly come in handy over the summer for when we have friends over, and just for a family campfire night.
all the cleanup was worth it! now everything is grown in, and has mostly survived the drought, thanks in large part to the thousands of gallons that joe used to water everything (i was totally against watering things, just fyi!)
he says that since we did so much work this year, next year will be easier. i hope he's right, cause there is no way i'm doing that much work every spring! i do enjoy the yard a ton though, so i guess it's worth it!
